A hybrid energy storage inverter is not simply a device that connects solar panels and batteries. Depending on the project, it can reduce electricity costs, provide backup power, support a microgrid, or even operate without a utility grid.

So, before choosing an inverter, one question should come first:

How do you want your energy system to operate?

In most projects, hybrid inverters can be configured around four basic operating modes.

1. Grid-Connected Mode

This is the most straightforward application.

The inverter works with PV, battery, grid and loads. Solar power can be used directly by the loads, while surplus energy can charge the battery. The battery can then discharge during high-price periods or when solar production is insufficient.

The main objective is simple: Use more solar energy and reduce the cost of grid electricity. With an appropriate EMS strategy, the system can support functions such as peak shaving, time-of-use energy shifting and export limitation.

2. Single-Unit Grid + Backup Mode

Here, the inverter has another job: keeping important loads running when the grid fails.

Under normal conditions, the system operates with the utility grid. If the grid becomes unavailable or abnormal, the inverter switches to backup operation and supplies designated loads from the battery and other available energy sources.

3. Multi-Unit Grid + Backup Mode

When the required power becomes too large for a single inverter, multiple hybrid inverters can work together.

The units operate as a coordinated system, sharing power and supporting the common loads. This makes it possible to build larger energy storage systems without relying on one extremely large inverter.

4. Off-Grid Mode

No utility grid? The system can still operate.

In an off-grid configuration, PV and batteries become the main energy sources, while a generator can be used as backup when necessary.

The generator does not necessarily need to run continuously. A battery SOC threshold can be configured so that the generator starts when the battery reaches a defined low level and stops after the required charging or power-support condition is met.

A quick way to identify the suitable configuration is to look at the project from three angles:
